Challenge Brief

Packaging is essential in logistics to protect items in transit, but it often leads to excessive waste. With the rise of e-commerce and home delivery, the demand for sustainable solutions has grown. XPO wants you to focus on innovating packaging that balances sustainability and product protection within its pallet network operations, ranging from single items to full pallets, including oversized goods.

Key Focus Areas

Reducing the overall amount of packaging used without compromising product safety.

Minimising the use of non-recyclable materials and promoting recyclable or reusable alternatives.

Exploring new materials and innovations that are both sustainable and commercially viable.

We would like you to:

Suggest models for protecting product integrity within a pallet network operation (e.g. anything from single items to full pallets, including outsized items)

o   Taking into consideration the goal of reducing overall packaging

o   Minimising the use of non-recyclable packaging

Highlight what innovations are coming to the market with this dual focus of being more sustainable and offering maximum protection of product.

To really get into the challenge and demonstrate a strong grasp of the issues around packaging, we would like you to identify and consider:

·       What are the problem areas?

·       What is driving action (e.g. what are the key legislative levers being pulled)

·       Are there any specific problems in the UK? (e.g. protection of water courses & resources, litter, etc)

·       Focus on Commercial operations such as warehouses and logistics but also supply chains too

·       Focus has shifted to producers (e.g. extended producer responsibility – EPR)

o   Is this a balanced approach?

o   What, if any, are the pitfalls of this approach?

o   Is this ‘just another tax’ being levied on business? (alongside other taxes – recent plastics tax, requiring 30% recycled content in plastics packaging otherwise the tax is levied)

o   What could a more balanced approach look like? – role of consumers and packaging increase driven by this demand (e.g. e-commerce explosion and amount of paper/card being used in such business models)

·       What areas of innovation are developing? – with some thought given to commercial viability

o   Plastics

o   Paper/card

o   Shift back to wood, steel, glass

o   Mushrooms

o   Synthetic / nature based

Submission Opens: 25th October, 11 AM

In the working world, you're often required to present ideas with minimal guidelines—whether it’s a presentation, report, or video pitch. That’s why we’ve given you the flexibility to submit your ideas in whichever format you feel works best. This mirrors real-world scenarios where it’s up to you to decide how to effectively communicate your ideas without restrictions like word count or slide count.

While we value experiential learning and want you to embrace this freedom, we also recognise that some guidance can be helpful. Below, we’ve provided a few ideas on how you could structure your submission. These are simply suggestions to inspire you and offer a bit of direction. Feel free to adapt or disregard them as you see fit—it's not required that you follow these templates.

Good luck, and we look forward to seeing your creativity in action!

Final Tips for All Formats:

  • Be Clear and Concise: Present your ideas in a clear and straightforward manner, avoiding jargon where possible.

  • Focus on Sustainability: Ensure that your proposed solutions emphasise sustainability while addressing the practical needs of packaging in logistics.

  • Include Evidence: Support your ideas with relevant data, case studies, or examples of successful innovations in the packaging industry.

  • Consider Market Drivers: Acknowledge the legislative and market factors driving the need for change in packaging practices.

  • Engage Your Audience: Whether in a video, presentation, or report, aim to engage your audience with visuals, storytelling, or compelling data.
